Debate Team
Wednesdays: 5-6pm
Mr. Maas

Course Summary: Students play the roles of members of Congress as they debate current events against other students from across the Chicagoland area. Students work together to brainstorm, draft, research, and debate their own short proposals on how the U.S. government should care for its citizens, deal with foreign countries, or improve the economy. Team members will improve their skills in public speaking, debate, online research, and logic, as well as their grasp of current events and the U.S. government.

Debaters compete against their peers from 30 different high schools in a series of five weekend tournaments held once a month through January. Advanced debaters may compete to qualify for both the Illinois state championships and national debate competitions. Debate team is ideal for any student considering a career in law, politics, or any career requiring strong public speaking skills (sales, education, business, etc.). The team is coached by two former debaters and current working professionals in Chicago (a healthcare consultant from Towers Watson and a lawyer from the Katten Muchin law firm).
